The acquisition marks Foresight’s entry into the dedicated long-term grid stability market, complementing its extensive portfolio of renewables and battery storage assets
London, 07 September 2026: Foresight Group (‘Foresight’), a leading infrastructure and private capital investment manager, today announces that a fund managed by Foresight has completed the acquisition of the Blackhillock Synchronous Condenser (‘Blackhillock’) from funds managed by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a part of BlackRock.
Located near the Blackhillock transmission substation in North-East Scotland - one of the UK’s most constrained and strategically important transmission nodes - Blackhillock has been operational since July 2025 and provides c. 2 GVA of short circuit level to the grid, supporting voltage recovery following network disturbances and enabling resilient grid operation.
With this acquisition, Foresight demonstrates its commitment to supporting the energy transition, through the provision of critical grid stability services to the UK’s electricity network. As one of only two synchronous condenser facilities in North-East Scotland, Blackhillock is a rare grid stability asset located in a high-priority area.
This investment comes at a pivotal moment for the UK’s energy transition. As the UK transitions from traditional coal and gas generation to inverter-based renewable energy, synchronous condensers are playing an increasingly important role in maintaining grid stability and resilience. The acquisition follows Foresight’s take-private of Harmony Energy Income Trust, which at the time of acquisition was the UK’s largest portfolio of operational battery storage assets. The acquisition of Blackhillock will complement Foresight’s existing portfolio of grid balancing solutions.
Anouska Morjaria, Investment Director at Foresight Group, said: “We are delighted to have completed the acquisition of the Blackhillock Synchronous Condenser, a strategically important asset providing essential grid stability services. As we see increasing levels of intermittent generation in our energy mix, there is a rising need for assets such as Blackhillock to stabilise the grid. This acquisition diversifies our portfolio of critical infrastructure assets, while supporting our investment into the technologies and services needed to enable the UK’s energy transition.”
